Know before you go

When planning travel it is important to consider a number of things. Insurancebookers hope to be able to assist with holiday insurance, and provide a variety of policy types and cover levels to suit various needs.

Before you travel we would suggest that you go through this travel checklist from the FCO which should help you stay safe and secure while you are away and help you be prepared in case things go wrong.

• Make sure you have valid travel insurance, even if you're only planning a short trip.
• Check that your travel insurance covers you for all the activities you want to do, including any dangerous sports
• Get your free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you are travelling within the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
• Visit your GP at least 6 weeks before you travel to get any vaccinations you might need.
• Read up on your destination, including local laws and customs.
• Make photocopies of your passport, visas and insurance details and leave a copy with a relative or friend at home.
• Take enough money with you and make sure you also take some back up funds such as a credit card or some traveller's cheques.
• Complete the contact details at the back of your passport for your next-of-kin or someone who can be contacted in an emergency.
• If you are planning to drive abroad make sure your UK driving licence is current and valid. Make sure you know the country's driving laws, licence requirements and driving conditions. In some countries you will need to have an international driving permit as well as your UK licence.

Travel insurance might be short stay holiday insurance such as our Single Trip policy, Business cover for those work related trips, winter sports holiday insurance for skiing or snowboarding breaks, or annual multi trip insurance to cover unlimited number of trips of up to 45 days within a 365 day period.

Application forms to obtain an EHIC are available from your local post office or you can download an application form from the following website: www.ehic.org.uk.This entitles European citizens to benefit from the health agreements which exist between countries in the European Union.

If you are travelling to Australia or New Zealand and you need medical treatment, you should enrol with Medicare or the equivalent scheme of these countries. Further information is available from the following website: www.hic.gov.au.

Insurancebookers do exclude cover for any claim arising as a result of failing to get the inoculations and vaccinations that are needed.

We also exclude claims that result from being involved in any illegal or criminal act, so it is important that you understand what the laws are where you are travelling.

All insurancebookers holiday insurance polices cover the cost of replacing the following items belonging to you if they are lost, stolen or damaged during your trip:
• Passport
• Travel and admission tickets
• Visas
To minimise the impact on your trip having details accessible will be of assistance.

The insurancebookers silver, gold and platinum level holiday insurance all have cover for personal money which has a separate limit for cash.

In addition to requirements for driving abroad do consider your own safety, for cover for a two-wheeled motor vehicle as a driver or passenger is dependent on you wearing a crash helmet, and the driver does not
hold an appropriate driving licence.
